Material Introduction

Embossed faux leather for luggage is a PU-coated fabric whose grain is pressed in by an engraved steel plate. The pattern is physical relief, not print: it stands above the coating and breaks up the scratches a flat film would keep. A suitcase punishes embossing twice — one panel is drawn over a corner radius at 110–130 °C, then dragged through terminals for years. Wear starts not between the grain but on the raised peaks, where the coating is thinnest after forming. Plate depth, top coat and cross-link density are set together, so peaks stay coated once stretched and abrasion reads as even sheen, not a white scar.

Grain depth that survives forming

A shallow plate looks right on the roll and goes flat in the press. We engrave 0.15–0.25 mm relief under a heat-stable coat, so the pattern stays readable over a 3 mm radius at 125 °C.

Abrasion measured where it fails

A flat sheet hides the number, because forming thins the peaks. Abrasion runs per order on panels from your formed shells, to Taber CS-10 or Martindale, at your cycles.

Scuff that reads as sheen

A matte cross-linked coat scuffs into a sheen a damp cloth lifts. A high-gloss coat scuffs into a chalky line that cannot be repaired, because the pigment layer is cut.

Cutting, edge work and uses

0.6 and 0.8 mm fold into piping and zip tape; 1.0 mm holds a soft-side front panel without a backing board. The surface hides needle tracks along a seam. Uses: hard-shell wrap, trolley bodies, duffels, laptop sleeves, vanity cases, luggage tags.
