DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BONDED AND FAUX LEATHER
Mar 11 , 2023

Bonded leather and faux leather are two common materials used in furniture upholstery, clothing, and other accessories. While they may look the same, they suffer from some fundamental differences. This article will explore these differences, highlighting the pros and cons of each in order to help consumers make an informed decision when considering which material to purchase.

Bonded leather is a composite material. It is made of up to 80 percent real leather fiber, combined with other materials including polyurethane, PVC, or recycled leather fibers. While it does retain some of the look, feel, and smell of leather, it lacks true texture, breathability, and durability. Bonded leather is usually the most affordable option and tends to be easy to clean and care for.

Faux leather, also known as vegan leather or pleather, is a synthetic material that is made to resemble the look and feel of leather but without any animal-derived ingredients. It is usually made of polyester, polyurethane, PVC, cotton, or nylon fibers. Faux leather has become very popular in recent years due to its various benefits. It is more durable, animal-friendly, and breathable than bonded leather. It is also available in a variety of colors and textures, making it perfect for upholstery, clothing, and accessories. However, faux leather can be more expensive than bonded leather and is prone to cracking over time.

When looking at overall quality, bonded leather usually wins out. Its combination of real leather and synthetic materials makes it a more durable and long-lasting option than faux leather. Bonded leather also retains more of the pleasant smell and softness of genuine leather. The downside is that it does not have the breathability of real leather and can be prone to wear and tear more easily.

Faux leather is the more affordable and animal-friendly option since it does not contain any of the real animal products used in bonded leather. It does not require a lot of upkeep and will not crack as easily, making it a great option for upholstery.  However, faux leather can be less durable than bonded leather, and as it is not a completely natural material, it can have a different odor than genuine leather.

When it comes to choosing between bonded leather and faux leather, it really depends on the intended use and budget. Bonded leather is usually the better choice for furniture and clothing, while faux leather may be more suitable for upholstery or accessories. Keep in mind that both will require extra care and maintenance over time in order to extend their life. Consider the cost, durability, and look before making a decision.
