Judging from the economic performance of the leather industry in 2019 released by the China Leather Association in the first half of this year, in 2019, the main leather industries above designated size (shoemaking, luggage, tanning, leather clothing, fur and products) achieved sales revenue and profits of 109.8199 billion. According to the analysis of the China Leather Association, in 2019, the national leather industry has maintained a relatively stable development trend under the relatively difficult internal and external environment. Although the industry's exports have achieved a slight increase, they are exported to the United States due to the impact of Sino-US trade frictions. The decline is obvious, and the downward pressure on the industry has increased significantly.
From the perspective of production, in 2019, the output of light leather above designated size in my country was 574 million square meters, and Hebei Province had the largest output, accounting for 33.6%. In the downstream product industry, the output of fur garments above designated size increased, the output of leather footwear enterprises above designated size increased slightly, and the output of leather garments declined. In 2019, the output of fur clothing enterprises above designated size in my country was 4.77 million pieces, a year-on-year increase of 22.82%; the output of leather shoes enterprises above designated size was 3.947 billion pairs, an increase of 1.79% year-on-year; the output of leather garment enterprises above designated size was 65,662,300, a year-on-year decrease of 9.22%.
In 2019, my country's leather industry exports continued to decline in 2015 and 2016, as well as recovering growth in 2017, 2018, and 2019, showing a slight growth trend, and the export growth rate increased by 1.45 percentage points compared with 2018. The increase in exports mainly came from fur clothing and footwear products, of which fur clothing contributed the most to the export growth rate of 0.65%; by footwear products, which contributed 0.57% to the growth rate; leather clothing, travel goods and luggage contributed to the export growth rate It is -0.07%, 0.16%. In the export market, the European Union replaced the United States and became the largest export market. With the deepening of the “Belt and Road” initiative, in 2019, my country’s leather industry’s total exports to countries along the “Belt and Road” reached US$28.47 billion, a year-on-year increase of 11.4% and accounting for 32.8% of the total leather industry exports. From the perspective of exporting provinces and cities, my country's leather industry exports in 2019 were mainly concentrated in Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Fujian, with exports accounting for 63.4%. Although Guangdong's export value was the first, it was down 5.5% year-on-year; Zhejiang was up 0.5% year-on-year, and Fujian's exports increased 6.9% year-on-year.
In 2019, my country's leather industry imports achieved a small increase, with a total import value of 15.548 billion US dollars, an increase of 2.7% year-on-year. Among them, footwear contributed the most to the import growth rate of 5.97%, travel goods and luggage were 4.18%; raw materials such as semi-finished leather, finished leather and ta
nned fur contributed to the import growth rate of -3.37%.
From the perspective of regional imports, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Guangdong accounted for 66.6% of total imports. Among them, Shanghai mainly imports products, accounting for 38.9% of my country’s total imports of footwear and 72.2% of total imports of luggage and bags; Guangdong mainly imports raw materials, accounting for 50.6% of my country’s imports of finished leather and 35.6% of imports of semi-finished leather. %. The EU and ASEAN are the two main sources of leather industry imports. Imports were 5.38 billion U.S. dollars and 5.12 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 67.5% of the total. Leather products imports from ASEAN increased by 22% year-on-year. This is after ASEAN replaced the EU as the largest source of imports for my country's leather industry in 2017, and was again surpassed by the EU, but the difference in imports between the two is small.
Since the beginning of this year, the spread of the new crown pneumonia epidemic globally has caused a deep impact on the global leather industry industrial chain. At present, enterprise production is gradually recovering in an orderly manner, but the situation abroad is relatively severe, which brings huge challenges and crises to industrial development. In the post-epidemic era, the leather industry must accelerate digital and intelligent transformation, marketing models, and technological innovation, while building a safer, greener, transparent, and sustainable industrial chain.
